Dermatologist shares 10 critical anti-aging factors and the Top-10 list of skincare solutions

Aging is an inevitable process, and anti-aging is like an endurance race, in which the person who makes the extra effort gets to look younger for a longer period of time. So when should I begin anti-aging routines, what are the things I can do to enhance the anti-aging effect, and what are the anti-aging ingredients most recommended by dermatologists?

From what age should I begin paying attention to anti-aging? What are the common signs of aging?

Let's begin with an introduction to the cause of skin aging. Generally speaking, the rate of cell regeneration starts to decline from the age of 25, and this is the time when our skin becomes less efficient at keeping moisture and renewal. Combined with external aging factors such as lack of sleep, chronic stress, UV exposure, air pollution etc., we may look older than what we are supposed to for a given age. The degree of aging can generally be determined from two aspects:

(1) Skin condition

Younger skin tends to have good oil-water balance and appear smooth and flawless. As we age, we renew dead skin cells at a slower rate, and these dead cells hang on to make our skin rough and dull; furthermore, the skin loses its ability to retain moisture, which makes it susceptible to dryness, tightness, and wrinkles especially in areas around the eyes or the mouth where the skin is thinner.

(2) Facial contour

When observed closely, it is easy to notice that mature skin tends to have less defined contours. This is due to the loss of collagen, a substance that provides support to the skin and gives it elasticity. Without the support, the skin succumbs to gravity and appears saggy; for people who often make expressions or look down on their phones, this is when nasolabial folds and marionette lines start to set in.

Dermatologist's 10 principles on anti-aging

People often ask me why certain anti-aging or skincare solutions do not work, and I would say to them that there are many "anti-aging mistakes" in life that can undermine their efforts and result in a waste of time and money. Lack of sleep, for example, is one of the worst things that people can do to the skin. Below are the ten proper habits that people must develop in order to stay young; do them right, and you'll see results!

1. Sun protection: UV ray has been widely recognized as the aging accelerator, because it causes dark spots and wrinkles that are difficult to get rid of. It is recommended to wear sunscreen, use umbrella, wear hat, or use other forms of physical shielding to block out UVA/UVB. Make sure to apply sun protection even indoors and on cloudy days.

2. Thorough but not excessive cleaning: We return home with grease, makeup residue, dead skin cells, and air pollutants on our faces everyday, which may cause acne or even inflammation that exacerbates aging if not cleaned properly. Make sure to be gentle with your cleaning actions, otherwise you may tear the skin and create wrinkles.

3. Antioxidants: Much of the aging is attributed to free radicals created within the body, which is why it is a good idea to avoid foods that are high in fat and salt, and lean towards foods that are rich in antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and anthocyanin. Guava, nuts, and blueberries are good examples of such foods.

4. Anti-glycation: The "glycation" reaction induced by sweets and refined starch causes us to lose collagen at a faster rate, and the skin appears dull and yellow as a result.

5. Drink more water: Replenishing water increases metabolism and helps discharge waste.

6. Avoid washing/showering with hot water: Water at too high a temperature damages the hydrolipidic film that preserves moisture and protects skin surface. This causes the skin to appear dry and age at a faster rate.

7. Get adequate sleep and rest: Nighttime is when the skin undergoes repair, and depriving yourself of sleep would disrupt the endocrine system and undermine the skin's repair efforts. Try go to sleep before 11pm everyday.

8. Regular exercise: Exercise increases metabolism and blood circulation, which brightens and brings energy to the skin.

9. Stress relief: Stress is another factor that induces free radicals; make sure to include recreational and entertainment activities into your busy schedule.

10. Ensure adequate hydration and choose skincare products with effective anti-aging ingredients: Hydration is the foundation of anti-aging. Sufficient moisture not only brightens your skin, but also promotes absorption of skincare solutions. Add in products that contain safe and effective anti-aging ingredients and you'll see significant improvements in few months.

What are the anti-aging ingredients to look for in skincare products?

  • Hyaluronic acid: Attracts water and keeps the skin hydrated for long period of time
  • Peptide: Collagen in smaller molecular size that easily penetrates the skin to deliver benefits such as smoothing wrinkles and improved elasticity
  • Extract of plants grown in extreme environments: Dwarf soapworts from Swiss glacial islands and gentiana venusta from the Himalayas, for example, offer excellent potency and reparative properties from their adaptation of extreme environments
  • Squalane: High skin-affinity, repairs the hydrolipidic film, and strengthens the natural barrier
  • Glutathione: Inhibits formation of dark pigment to lighten spots and brighten skin
